Fine Artist

Information

My work is influenced by subjectivism and existentialism. Using mainly photographs of myself I create work which is influenced by poetry and by my own thoughts, feelings and philosophies of a particular time. I use several motifs and they occur regularly such as hands to represent creativity, eyes to represent inner self and bee boxes to represent entrapment, frustration and control. Other motifs include wings, feathers, birds, stones, heads and feet. I try to achieve work which has an element of playfulness with an unsettling yet comforting feeling at the same time.

I am currently working on large scale drawings with a view to challenge myself with this medium. I have decided to not paint for the next few years to concentrate on drawing; a medium I feel can demonstrate an honest reflection of my artistic thoughts, due to its immediacy of marks. My poetic thoughts can be instantly represented by quick sketches and then if a strong image remains in my thoughts I create that piece on a larger scale. I have begun to work even more subjectively and figuratively, however this has happened subconsciously. My current work reflects on the self and its vulnerability, I have used Franz Kafka’s novel ‘The Trial’ as a source to create work such as the figure with three men, where the figure is being tormented from above by three men stirred by imagination. Other work reflects on ideas of self criticism.

My influences range from artists such as Joseph Cornell, Susan Rothenberg, Anselm Kiefer, Philip Guston, Francesco Clemente and Georg Baselitz. Also I am influenced by writers such as Sylvia Plath, Emily Dickinson, Philip Larkin, Franz Kafka and Chuck Palahunik.
